Play a game of volleyball

Now that summer is in full swing and you’re either in a park or on the beach try a good ol’ fashioned game of volleyball. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or have never played a game in your life, performing a few rounds of this type of exercise is not only healthy for the body but also for the soul.

There are six positions that anyone playing volleyball should recognize. These include the setter, server, blocker, spiker, passer, and the digger.

The setter is much like the quarterback in football or the point guard in basketball. The setter makes a decision about which hitter gets the ball based on the position of the pass, the availability of the hitters, the other team’s blocker position and abilities and the other team’s defense. The setter also blocks on the right side against the other team’s outside hitter.

The player serving the ball to the other team must stand behind the end line or restraining line at the back of the court until after they have contacted the volleyball. The player serves the ball with their hand over the net and into the opposing team’s side.

A blocker stands at the net in the middle of the court between two outside blockers. The middle blocker strives to be involved in blocking the opponent’s hitters wherever they may be on the court.

A spiker’s intention is to kill the ball on the opponent’s side by making contact with the ball above the height of the net when attempting to hit the ball over the net into the opponent’s court. The goal is to hit the ball with such great force that the ball will not be returnable.

A passer or also known as libero plays a special role in team defense and passing. The libero is the player on the team that can come into the game and replace any player on the back row. The libero may be put into the game to pass for a weaker passer or to help cover the court by making great defensive plays.

And, finally, the job of a volleyball digger is to prevent the ball from hitting the floor after being spiked by the opposing team. To dig, the volleyball players must anticipate the spike and be prepared to quickly dive in any direction.

Now that you’ve studied up on the volleyball positions, gather five of your friends and try testing your hand at this type of sport. Not only will you have exercised, but your group of friends will have grown closer together because of all the team work.
